Northeim, home to nearly 30,000 inhabitants, is almost 1000 years old. The city is characterized by its convenient location and an idyllic ensemble of old, beautifully restored half-timbered houses in the town center. Departing from the FREIgeist, you can walk to the 19th-century lookout tower on Northeim's highest mountain in a good half hour (2.5 km) through the forest. Ideal as a destination for a short hike. When the weather is suitable, the Harz Mountains are visible in the north-east and the Solling Hills in the west.

The old fire station was reopened in 2001 after renovations and is reminiscent of a witch's house with creative ideas and incredible attention to detail.
At the "Big Lake" in Northeim, you can not only swim, but also relax on a lovely cruise across the lake. Rent pedal boats, canoes and more at the Northeim Boat Rental. If a pedal boat is a little too pedestrian for you, try preparing your food on the "BBQ Donut" – a round boat with an integrated charcoal grill – and cruise across the lake in comfort.
The Hardenberg has stood for excellent ingredients and masterful distillation since 1700. The distillery not only cultivates their raw materials on the count's estates in Lower Saxony, but processes them directly in-house. Under the new roof of the Hardenberg Distillery, they prepare the finest of hand-made spirits. Honest, direct and strong in character – just like the people who make them. As in the past, everything happens on site, from raw ingredients to finished product.
